Facts about obesity

If you are overweight, you are not alone. In fact, 1 in 3 Australians are overweight or obese.

Excess weight, especially obesity, is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, some musculoskeletal conditions and some cancers. As the weight increases, so does the risk of developing these conditions.

Are you overweight?

Body mass index, or BMI, is used to determine whether you are in a healthy weight range for your height. It will provide an idea of whether you’re underweight, a healthy weight, overweight, or obese for your height. BMI is a useful measurement for most people over 18 years old. But it is only an estimate and it doesn’t take into account gender, age, ethnicity and body composition. Speak to your doctor, an Accredited Practising Dietitian or a health practitioner about your weight.

Pre-surgery weight loss:

It is important to lose some weight prior to surgery. Losing weight will help assist the surgical procedure and reduce associated risks. Weight loss can also help improve a fatty liver.

Following a VLCD Meal Plan for 2-3 weeks before surgery is recommended by most bariatric surgeons and dieticians. The Formulite Meal Plan is a great example of a VLCD meal plan suitable for such use.
The meal plan is a very-low-calorie-diet (VLCD) designed to produce fast weight loss of around 1.5-2.5kg per week.

A VLCD is a low-carbohydrate, total food replacement for the dietary management of obesity, providing only 800 calories or less per day, yet providing total nutrition to maintain health and functioning.

How the VLCD works:

A Very Low-Calorie Diet (VLCD) is a defined as a total daily intake of 800 calories (3300kJ) or less. To avoid nutritional deficiencies, this level of energy deficit is best achieved using nutritionally complete meal replacement shakes such as Formulite.  A VLCD facilitates rapid weight loss at the rate of 1-2.5kg/week.*

What is a fatty liver?

Fatty liver is a term that describes a build-up of fat in the liver. While it’s normal to have some fat in your liver, it is unhealthy to have more than 5 to 10 percent of your liver’s weight as fat. It can be improved with a VLCD.

Formulite’s role in ketosis

Ketosis is a metabolic state whereby your body switches from using glucose for fuel to using the ketones in your blood. When in ketosis, insulin levels are low. This means that fat stores are available to be utilised to produce energy. Ketosis can be achieved by a low carbohydrate diet that depletes the body’s glycogen stores. Formulite is a low-carbohydrate meal replacement shake that can assist in achieving ketosis to aid with weight loss and the management of some medical conditions. Consult your health professional to find out if achieving ketosis using Formulite is right for you.

Formulite shakes are one of the few meal replacements that can legitimately be used in conjunction with a ketogenic diet plan. In order to achieve ketosis, carbohydrates need to be kept to a bare minimum, and those carbohydrates would primarily come from fibrous vegetables. Other meal replacements on the market can contain close to 20grams of sugar per serving. Having 3 shakes a day would therefore equal nearly 60grams of sugar in shakes alone. Formulite has only 3g of naturally occurring sugar per serving, and most of the carbohydrates are in the form of fibre – making it much easier to achieve Ketosis.

Once you get to the stage of ketosis, which happens more quickly with Formulite, your appetite decreases.
