You should be because lupin is fast becoming the ultimate ‘superfood’, thanks to its exceptional nutrition profile and research backed health benefits.

Lupin is part of the legume family, making it naturally gluten free and a great option for those with coeliac disease or gluten intolerance. Lupin is also GMO free and sustainably grown.

Lupin is rich in protein (40%) and essential amino acids, dietary fibre (37%), including pre-biotic fibre, micronutrients (potassium, magnesium, calcium, zinc and iron) and antioxidants (carotenoids: beta-carotene, lutein and zeaxanthin). It is low in carbohydrate (4%), has a low GI (glycaemic Index) and is also low in fat (7%), which are comprised of predominately unsaturated fatty acids.

There is scientific evidence which supports the consumption of lupin enriched food products having an appetite supressing effect (keeping you full for longer), resulting in people consuming fewer kilojoules over the day. This comes as no surprise, since lupin is loaded with protein, fibre and is also low GI.

The other benefit of enriching products with lupin is that they can help alter the glycaemic load and glycaemic index of carbohydrate containing foods, which is highly beneficial for people with diabetes.

It’s no secret that lupin is one of the highest sources of plant protein, making it a great protein source for vegetarians and vegans. What you might not know is that lupin is one of the highest natural sources of the amino acid arginine, which has been linked to improving blood pressure.

Its amazing fibre content not only has been shown to improve gut health, but more recently the fibre found in lupin has also been found to have beneficial effects on blood pressure.

The only draw back is that lupin, like other legumes (such as peanuts and soybeans) may cause an allergic reaction in some individuals.
